LIBRARY SUBSTITUTE

The Grand Ledge Area District Library is looking for a friendly and resourceful individual to join our staff.  Library Substitutes do not have a regular weekday schedule, but may be assigned day, nights or weekend hours and are employed to provide service in the absence of other regular employees.

Duties:

Substitutes are responsible for a wide variety of clerical activities and considerable communication with, and service to, library patrons to ensure a positive library experience.

This position includes managing the circulation desk during assigned shifts, shelving and shelf reading of library materials.

Successful candidates will assist library staff with programming by promoting and distributing materials for library events and reading programs; handing out prizes; assisting/leading craft, tours, and special programs; and data entry of statistics and evaluations.

Duties may also the promotion of library resources, and other tasks as assigned.

Schedule:

4-16 hours per week depending on the scheduling needs of programming and the circulation desk.  Must be able to handle working in an environment that sometimes may be hectic and noisy. The schedule is somewhat flexible, but attendance at some library programs is expected.

Education & Experience: Education normally acquired through the completion of a high school degree. Previous library, retail, or clerical experience with a large degree of interactions with the general public preferred. Undergraduate work specializing in early childhood development and/or reading development, recreation management, theater, or education preferred.

Skills: Ability and willingness to interact in a friendly, positive manner with children and adults. Experience in working with children. Strong organizational skills. Ability and willingness to speak in front of groups of children and caregivers. Comfortable being outdoors and working with animals as needed.

Considerable experience with Windows, Internet browsers, and web applications desired as well as ability to quickly learn new software programs.

Requires reliable transportation.

Wage $12.00/hr.
